Lama Stéphane completed the traditional three-year retreat under the guidance of Gendün Rinpoche. Following this, he spent another twelve years in retreat under the guidance of two of Gendün Rinpoche’s important Western disciples, Lama Henrik and Lama Wali, who themselves spent twenty-five years in retreat under Gendün Rinpoche’s guidance.
Lama Stéphane is not someone who has merely heard about or studied meditation and its stages. He is someone who has dedicated a substantial part of his life to understanding and deepening his own experience of meditation, investing the time, effort and perseverance this requires.
It is very rare to meet someone who has spent so much time perfecting something, and even rarer to meet someone who is willing to share it with others so generously.
His modest manner, kindness and patience, which he demonstrated during his previous visits, together with the recommendations of Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche and Beru Khyentse Rinpoche, speak to his authenticity as a Dharma practitioner.
Lama Stéphane’s primary concern is to help students understand the essential points of meditation through their own experience and learn how to apply the instructions in a practical way.
We are very happy that he has accepted our invitation and will teach the Dharma. In our time, finding a qualified meditation teacher is very difficult, which makes us especially grateful to Lama Stéphane.
This is because authentic transmission is a time-consuming process. Traditionally, the transmission of meditation instructions takes place over many months in strict retreat.
The reason is simple, developing stability in meditation takes time.
Onepointedness (shiné) is a state of mental stability that anyone with a mind can develop. Yet reaching it requires repeated attempts, careful adjustments, and practical guidance from a teacher who can respond to the practitioner’s actual experience.
Without this guidance, it is easy to misunderstand what arises during meditation. Some practitioners may mistake particular experiences for an understanding of the nature of mind or of emptiness. Such misunderstandings can become serious obstacles to further progress on the path.
During shiné practice, many different experiences may arise. Broadly speaking, these are traditionally described in three categories: joy, clarity, nonconceptuality
It is important to become familiar with these experiences on a practical level, so that we develop a clear sense of the quality and nature of the experience we are seeking.
Whether we practise the path of the Śrāvakas, the Bodhisattvas or the Tantrikas, onepointedness determines the effectiveness of our practice on every path.
But even in worldly life, our ability to act with focus and concentration determines the impact of our actions.
Whatever we undertake, understanding what onepointedness is, how to develop it and how to make it a natural part of our lives is of great benefit.
The value of these teachings is difficult to measure. When genuinely understood and integrated into our lives, they can bring about a fundamental shift in how we relate to our minds, our actions and our everyday experiences.
If we enjoy suffering, dissatisfaction and confusion, onepointedness may not seem particularly useful.
This course does not promise to replace several months of strict retreat.
Rather, it promises that by the 79th day, we will have a clear understanding of what onepointedness is and what it is not, how to gather and settle the mind, and how to move towards direct experiential investigation beyond conceptual understanding. We will become confident in recognizing our own meditative experience.
This course offers a glimpse into the approach of a contemporary practicing yogi.
Anyone can join, even if you are completely new to meditation.
You commit to meditating for 30-45 minutes every day until the beginning of February.
