Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche
The lineage holder of the unbroken Karma Kagyu tradition

His Eminence Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche

The Fourth Jamgon Kongtrul Mingyur Drakpa Senge was born on December 17, 1995, in the Kathmandu Valley, the son of Beru Khyence Rinpoche.

Jamgon Yangshi began reading books at the age of five and memorized the rituals and practices of his own spiritual tradition. He received numerous Vajrayana empowerments, mainly in the Karma Kagyu tradition, as well as other practices related to guru meditation. He also received teachings, transmissions, and oral instructions in the practice of Mahamudra.

In December 2016, he received the red Dharma crown, the symbol of the most important Kagyu lineage holders, from the 17th Karmapa at the ancient Karma Kagyu monastery in Bodhgaya, India, the site of Buddha’s enlightenment.

In October 2018, Rinpoche began the traditional three-and-a-half-year retreat in Pharping, near Kathmandu, during which the deepest teachings of the tradition are put into practice by the retreatants, and on May 4, 2022, they successfully completed the retreat.

Since then, Rinpoche has given teachings and transmissions in several Asian countries, and in the summer and fall of 2024, he completed a two-month tour of Europe. At the request and persistent urging of his disciples, he will continue his Dharma activities in European centers in 2025.

Amitabha Empowerment

Amitabha Buddha — the Buddha of Boundless Light — is associated with the western direction and the pure land of Dewachen (Sanskrit: Sukhavati), which is one of the most well-known places of liberation after death in Mahayana Buddhism. Amitabha is the head of the Lotus family of the five Buddha families, thus embodying loving compassion and wisdom, who promised that all those who make sincere wishes to him and imagine and visualize his pure land will indeed be able to be reborn there after death.

The practice of Phowa is also connected to Amitabha Buddha, which is specifically the practice of transferring consciousness, but the first step in this is empowerment, through which we enter the mandala of Amitabha Buddha. Empowerment serves to bring the practitioner into direct contact with Amithaba’s blessing, so that through subsequent practice, the practitioner can truly develop within themselves the qualities that will enable the transfer of consciousness to the pure land at the moment of death.

The Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism places particular emphasis on the transmission of teachings through empowerments, as these convey not only theoretical knowledge but also living, experiential wisdom. After receiving the empowerment, the practitioner receives the right and inner authorization to practice the sadhana—the visualization and mantra practice of Amitabha—independently.

This event offers a rare opportunity to connect directly with a Buddha representing a transcendent state of consciousness and to touch upon the possibility that death is not an end but a transition, as well as a great opportunity for liberation.

Phowa – The Practice of Transferring Consciousness

The teaching of Phowa belongs to the highest class of tantra and is also known in the Kagyu Tradition as one of the six yogas of Naropa, but of course this method also originates from Shakyamuni Buddha.

Phowa is usually taught in connection with Amithaba Buddha, the leader of the Lotus family of the five Buddha families, and the purpose of the technique is to direct the consciousness to Amithaba Buddha’s pure land, Sukhavati, or in Tibetan, Devachen, at the moment of death.

After receiving the transmission and instructions, the practitioner becomes capable of transferring their consciousness through appropriate retreats and persistent practice, which is a conscious preparation for the moment of death, and practitioners who have realized Phowa can also help others at the moment of death.

During the transmission, participants receive a verbal transmission of the practice, instructions, and explanations necessary for the spirit and visualization of the practice.
Phowa is not just a tool for preparing for death. It also contributes to our understanding of our own consciousness and the nature of phenomena, thereby benefiting ourselves and others.

This transmission is part of a spiritual heritage that has been passed down from master to disciple for thousands of years and is now becoming available to us in the West.

Phowa Teaching: Detailed Teaching on Mind Transfer at the Moment of Death

This extraordinary occasion provides participants with in-depth guidance on the practice of phowa—the conscious transfer of consciousness—which is one of the most important death-related practices in the Tibetan Buddhist meditation tradition.

The aim of the program is for participants to:

• understand the Buddhist view of the process of death and bardo (intermediate state)

• learn the steps of consciousness transfer

• receive detailed guidance on the practice

By putting all this into practice, they will later gain their own real experiences, thus gaining a deeper understanding of the process of death and the true nature of consciousness at the moment of death, so that they may truly have a chance at liberation.

This program is not only practical guidance, but also real spiritual preparation on how to face the final transition of this life consciously, without fear, and with inner freedom.
